The procession carrying the remain of Sapper Steven Marshall, from the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment traveled from CFB Trenton down the Highway of Heroes to the Coroner's building in Toronto. Since 2002 a grassroots following of thousands of people have stood atop of bridges all along the route paying respects to fallen Canadian soldiers. Vehicles passing underneath regularly show their support by honking their horns at people on the bridges before the procession passes.
Sapper Marshall was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his dismounted patrol approximately 10 km south-west of Kandahar City on 30 Oct 2009.
