The 142nd Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan was brought home to Canada on Wednesday afternoon in a repatriation ceremony at CFB Trenton.
Hundreds of onlookers and supporters stood along a chainlink fence that borders the tarmac of the military base in central Ontario to pay their respects to Pte. Tyler Williams Todd.
Family members, some holding a single rose, wept as the flagged-draped casket was unloaded from the military plane.
A single piper played as the casket was carried to a waiting hearse for the drive to Toronto, down the stretch of Highway 401 known as the Highway of Heroes.
Todd, 26, from Bright, Ont., was killed by a roadside bomb while on foot patrol Sunday, about eight kilometres outside of Kandahar.
He was a member of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia¹s Canadian Light Infantry based out of Edmonton.
He was just weeks away from completing a six-month tour.
Another soldier, whose identity has not been released, was also injured in the blast.
Doug Blakely and his wife Ann of Whitby, Ont., have sometimes watched from one of the highway overpasses as hearses made the trip to Toronto from CFB Trenton.
On Wednesday, they drove to the base to watch the ceremonies.
“The least we can do is show our support for family members to show them we care,” said Doug.
National Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Walter Natynczyk, and 8 Wing commanding Officer Col. David Cochrane were among the dignitaries.
