Just a heads up, our 2010 Chris Garrett Memorial Charity
Poker Run is fast approaching. This years run is on Saturday, Sept 11, aptly
enough. This will be the 7th year Chris's memory will honored in this way, and
to date over $21000.00 has been raised for local and national charities. The
ride starts and finishes in Cobourg, and is hosted by the paramedics of
Northumberland County EMS.
This year's Chris Garrett Memorial Charity Motorcycle Poker Run proceeds will
benefit the Canadian Forces - Military Families Fund. This fund is used to
support Military Personnel and their families in their time of need. It is
administered by the Canadian Forces Personnel Support Agency, and offers tax
deductible receipts for all donations.
Chris Garrett was a Cobourg Police Service constable who was murdered in the
line of duty while apprehending an armed and dangerous person who had set into
motion a violent crime spree. Constable Garrett's heroic actions prevented
further harm to the public that night, but unfortunately, cost him his life.
This annual charity poker run is a chance to remember Constable Garrett, and his
sacrifice.
It's a "Poker Run" format, no long lines of slow bikes! Set your own route, set
your own pace, run it solo or group up. As long as you hit the 5 stations and
come back with a poker hand, your speed is between you and the local
constabulary ;) IT IS NOT A RACE. All entrants will have plenty of time to
complete the route.
Anyone who doesn't ride but who would like to donate or participate please
contact me. This is a fun event for everyone, and I'm sure we can provide a roll
for you!
Please take the time to forward this to work email lists, riding groups, and
military/emergency services message boards!

I received a 50
calenders from FIRMM honouring our fallen Canadian heroes.
This calender is endorsed by the families of the fallen, Department of National
Defense and it tells about the good things our military is doing in Afghanistan.
Shane Keating's 30-year-old nephew, Cpl. Shane Keating, was killed on Sept. 18,
2006 along
with three other soldiers when a suicide bomber rode his bicycle up to a
Canadian foot patrol.
Mr. Keating, a principal of Our Lady of Wisdom School in Chestermere, Alta.,
came up with the
idea of a calendar after speaking with fallen soldiers' families -- Gaetan and
Diane Dallaire, Mel
and Helen Keller, Linda Loree (mother of Nathan Hornburg), and Michael Hornburg,
Tim and
Sally Goddard.
From those meetings the group called FIRMM (Families In Remembrance of Military
Members)
was formed.
A registered non-profit society in Alberta, FIRMM completed the calendar costs
$20.
For those who are interested in the calender please contact me.
I plan on doing a story for the paper in the near future, but just wanted to
post this as soon as the
calenders arrived to give people a “heads-up.”

2002-2008 Highway of
Heroes Tribute
I have put together a slideshow of
photos I've taken since 2002 covering our fallen heroes return. The first
photo I took was in Port Hope when approximately 30 people came out to a bridge
simultaneously to show their support for the families and as a way to honour
the first four fallen soldiers in 2002. The pictures are from the
repatriations at CFB Trenton, the three ridealongs I've done along the Highway
of Heroes, and from various bridges along the way.

News correspondent Kevin Tibbles, Producer Hilary Guy did an exceptional job
capturing the feeling of what it's like being on a bridge along the Highway of
Heroes. Here are two videos from NBC.
